Tesla Budget Model Q, Smaller and Lighter Than Model 3, Set to Debut in Early Q2

Since Tesla's Q1 2024 earnings call in April last year, the company has hinted that multiple new vehicles will be launched this year, including more affordable electric cars. Rumors suggest that this new model is called "Model Q/2," with an official release timeline set for the first half of this year. However, recent reports indicate that the release may be moved up, potentially debuting as early as Q2!

It has been officially confirmed that Tesla is planning to release a more affordable electric vehicle than the Model 3. However, very little official information is available about this new car, and even the rumored name "Model Q" has not been confirmed by Tesla.

That said, there is plenty of information circulating online about the Model Q, with the most credible source being a report from Deutsche Bank. The report states that after subsidies, the Model Q's price in the U.S. will be under $30,000. The car will be built using Tesla’s existing production lines, though it will feature new platform technologies and won't simply be a smaller version of the Model 3 or Model Y.

Despite being a more affordable electric vehicle, Deutsche Bank's report also mentions that the Model Q's base price, without subsidies, is expected to be $37,499. This is still a gap compared to Tesla's earlier promise of a $25,000 electric car.

Other reports suggest that the Model Q will be 15% smaller than the Model 3, with a length of 3,988 mm and a weight reduction of 30%. Battery options will include 53 kWh and 75 kWh (using LFP batteries), with a maximum range of up to 500 km.

Although Tesla is keeping tight-lipped, there are now alleged spy shots of the Model Q circulating online, with analysts claiming that the new car is indeed smaller in size.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk had previously outlined a plan for a $25,000 car, often referred to as the "Model 2" or "Model Q." Tesla is aiming to launch this vehicle in Q2 2025, though the company has faced several delays and made revisions to its original plans. During the Q4 2024 earnings call, company officials confirmed that they would leverage existing production facilities and technologies from their current vehicle lines to develop this affordable car.

A reliable source has disclosed that Tesla plans to begin production of these new models in the first half of 2025, with a commercial release to follow. Tesla may have already hinted at this in a recent Model Y video, which featured two mysterious next-generation prototype cars. The new vehicles will combine Tesla's existing manufacturing innovations and components to meet quality standards while achieving lower price targets. There are also rumors that the upcoming Model 2 may feature newly designed turn signal stalks, which could also appear on the Model 3.
