Tesla Confirms New Model Y will Launch 7-Seater and Performance Versions

Tesla began gradually launching the all-new Model Y in global markets starting in January of this year. However, it currently only offers two versions: the rear-wheel-drive standard range and the all-wheel-drive long-range version. The Performance version has yet to be released, which is similar to the situation when the refreshed Model 3 debuted in 2023.

However, Tesla executives, including Chief Designer Franz and Vice President of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy, mentioned the upcoming seven-seat and high-performance versions of the new Model Y in a recent episode of Jay Leno's Garage.

They stated that the new Model Y Performance would be launched by the end of this year and would initially be available as a "limited edition," with a powerful 458-horsepower engine, just slightly below the 460-horsepower of the Model 3 Performance.

It is still unclear whether the seven-seat option will be available globally, as prior to the launch of the all-new Model Y, only the older versions of the Model Y in the U.S. and Europe offered the seven-seat option.

Additionally, Chinese media reported last year that Tesla plans to release a China-exclusive seven-seat version of the new Model Y in the fourth quarter of this year to boost competitiveness. However, these rumors have not been officially confirmed.

On January 10 of this year, Tesla China launched the refreshed Model Y, which features a completely redesigned front-end, front and rear headlights, rear diffuser, wheels, and side mirrors. It also introduces new features like front and rear seat heating, front seat ventilation, ergonomic headrests, ambient lighting, and electrically adjustable rear seats. Deliveries of the new car will begin in March.

In fact, as the current top-selling electric SUV in China, the Tesla Model Y has never offered a seven-seat version in the country, which has, to some extent, allowed other seven-seat SUVs to capture some market share.

In the U.S. market, Tesla has launched a seven-seat version of the Model Y. However, the vehicle's length is only 4,750mm, and with a height of 1,624mm and a sloping roofline, the third-row seating space is very cramped. Previous photos of the seven-seat Model Y showed that if the second-row seats are pushed back even a little, there is no legroom left in the third row, forcing passengers to sit cross-legged.

Therefore, if Tesla were to launch a seven-seat version of the all-new Model Y, the vehicle's length and wheelbase may need to be increased.
