There’s fresh buzz about Tesla’s long-rumored affordable model, the “Model Q/2”! According to reports, Tesla’s Investor Relations lead, Travis Axelrod, disclosed at a Deutsche Bank investor conference that Tesla plans to unveil the Model Q next year.
Previously, Tesla CEO Elon Musk mentioned during an investor call that Tesla aims to launch new models in the second half of 2025 to expand its market potential. Among these new models is the Model Q.
Codenamed “Redwood” internally, the upcoming Model Q will be built on Tesla’s new platform. It is expected to be 15% smaller and approximately 30% lighter than the Model 3, with an overall length of around 3,988mm.
Leaked media renderings, based on Tesla’s design sketches, suggest that the Model Q will adopt Tesla’s signature family design language, featuring a closed front grille and sharp LED headlights.
From the side, the Model Q is expected to have a compact four-door layout with a segmented waistline, enhancing the car’s visual depth and structure.
In terms of power, the entry-level Model Q is likely to use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs, available in 53kWh and 75kWh capacities, to balance cost and durability. There’s also speculation that it may adopt BYD’s Blade Battery or Tesla’s in-house 4680 cells, both of which offer higher energy density and improved efficiency.
The Model Q will reportedly come in single-motor and dual-motor all-wheel-drive variants, offering a driving range of up to 500 km.
Its reduced size and weight, along with lower production costs, make the Model Q particularly well-suited for urban driving and parking. The car is expected to be priced under $30,000, with North America as its initial launch market.
After subsidies, the Model Q is projected to cost between $25,000 and $30,000, echoing Elon Musk’s earlier statements about the “Cybercab” during Tesla’s Q3 earnings call. Once launched, the Model Q would become Tesla’s most affordable car, competing directly with models like the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3.
Tesla’s decision to launch a sub-$30,000 vehicle is driven by the need to scale up its electric vehicle production. Musk has previously stated that Tesla aims to sell 20 million EVs annually by 2030, a target difficult to achieve solely with high-end models. The introduction of a low-cost car like the Model Q makes this ambitious sales goal more attainable.
In summary, as Tesla’s new entry-level vehicle, the Model Q has captured the market’s attention with its design, powertrain options, range, and affordability. It is shaping up to be a significant milestone for Tesla’s push toward mass-market EV adoption.
There have been multiple reports circulating on Chinese social media suggesting that Tesla discussed the "Model Q" with Deutsche Bank investors. However, the specifics remain unclear, leading many to believe these claims may simply recycle existing rumors.
As of now, there hasn’t been any substantial new information from Tesla’s official announcements or Elon Musk’s updates on X. While the spotlight is currently on the Robotaxi and Cybertruck, it seems the Model Q is still waiting its turn.
