Tesla has begun rolling out a limited release of FSD (Full Self-Driving) V13 to select users in the U.S. The first version, V13.2, introduces the ability to activate FSD with a single tap on the car's interface after setting navigation.
FSD V13.2 Early Access Release
The update has been made available to Early Access testers, a group of trusted Tesla users who typically get early hands-on experience with new features. These testers operate outside Tesla's extensive internal safety testing suite, helping capture more diverse scenarios. If no major issues arise, Tesla plans to gradually expand the rollout to more vehicles over the coming weeks. If everything goes smoothly, this version could reach most customers by Christmas.
Hardware Compatibility
Currently, FSD V13 is limited to vehicles equipped with AI4 (Hardware 4.0). This excludes the Cybertruck, which operates on its own FSD branch. While the Cybertruck lacks features like Actually Smart Summon and Speed Profiles, it does have end-to-end functionality on highways. Recently, the Cybertruck received the 2024.39.5 update (FSD V12.5.5.3).
Upcoming Version: V13.3
A month ago, Tesla announced plans to release V13.3 around Thanksgiving (November 28), which would expand upgraded features to vehicles equipped with AI4 hardware. While the exact timeline shifted slightly, the official rollout of the FSD V13 series has begun as promised.
FSD V13 (Supervised Mode) Key Upgrades
According to the release notes, FSD V13 includes a comprehensive overhaul of the end-to-end driving network, featuring the following improvements:
- 36 Hz full-resolution video input via AI4 (HW4.0) hardware
- Native AI4 inputs and redesigned neural network architecture
- 4.2x increase in data scale
- 5x increase in training computational scale (powered by Cortex clusters)
- 2x reduction in latency from photons to control
- New speed profiles for urban streets and highways
- One-tap activation of FSD (supervised mode)
- Integrated Summon, Path Tracking, and Parking features
- Improved collision-avoidance reward prediction
- Enhanced camera cleaning performance
- Redesigned controllers for smoother and more accurate trajectory tracking
- Dynamic rerouting around construction zones, with visual indicators on the screen when detected by the fleet
Planned Future Improvements
Tesla has outlined additional upgrades to enhance FSD performance, including:
- 3x increase in model size and context length
- Audio input integration for better handling of emergency vehicles (e.g., police cars, ambulances)
- Improved reward prediction for navigation
- Addressing issues with false braking and slow driving in parking lots
- Support for destination-specific options, such as roadside parking, garage entry, or driveway access
- More efficient display of maps and navigation inputs
- Enhanced handling of camera occlusions
On November 24, Elon Musk confirmed the imminent release of FSD V13. By November 28, Tesla’s VP of AI hinted at the rollout, delivering on earlier promises.
This time, there’s no need for the usual “two weeks” jokes about Musk’s timelines.
