Tesla Expands FSD v12.6 Update to All Model S, 3, X, and Y with HW3.0

Tesla Expands FSD v12.6 Update to All Model S, 3, X, and Y with HW3.0

In early December last year, Tesla began rolling out FSD v13 to a select group of overseas users.

Two weeks later, Tesla’s Vice President of AI Software, Ashok Elluswamy, announced that the FSD v13.2.1 update had been expanded to all vehicles equipped with AI4 (HW4.0). He also mentioned that a “major update” of FSD v12.6 would be released to AI3 (HW3.0) users before the end of the year.

By December 31, Tesla had met the promise of releasing the FSD v12 update before the year ended. However, it was initially only available to Model S/X users, with the company emphasizing that several key improvements from v13 would be integrated into v12.6. This meant that Model S3XY owners with HW3.0 could experience some features from the v13 update in the FSD v12 series.

Yesterday, Ashok Elluswamy confirmed in response to a Tesla owner that FSD v12.6 has now been fully rolled out to vehicles equipped with AI3 (HW3.0).

This means that overseas owners of the Tesla Model S3XY with HW3.0 can now access the features in FSD v12.6 (specifically v12.6.1).

Additionally, Tesla released the 2024.45.25.15 version of the vehicle software update for Model S3XY owners with HW3.0 last night.

Now, HW3.0 + FSD v12.6.1 owners can enjoy features such as end-to-end highway driving, optimization of city street driving behavior, and the early integration of some FSD v13 features, enhancing the overall driving experience with more intelligent capabilities.

FSD V12.6.1

V12.6 represents a significant advancement for HW3, incorporating end-to-end highway driving, improved city street behavior, and smoother, more accurate tracking—features that contribute to a better, smoother, and more comfortable FSD experience. These features essentially come from FSD V13, so users should view FSD v12.6 as a hybrid between FSD V12 and FSD V13. In fact, Tesla seems to have considered naming this version V13.

Its performance is comparable to that of the FSD V13 in the Cybertruck version. While it still lacks some features found in other HW4 vehicles, it’s a positive sign for HW3. Many of the improvements can be attributed to better lane choice and decision-making—on v12.6, the vehicle hesitates much less, resulting in smoother driving. Early testers of v12.6 mentioned that it feels more like a "V13-mini."

The release notes mention that the controller is responsible for tracking objects around the vehicle. Since the vehicle can only drive within its field of view, the improved tracking accuracy directly enhances the decision-making of FSD, leading to smoother driving. This is very evident in FSD v12.6, which now provides a level of smoothness comparable to what users experience in FSD v13.
