Tesla Recalls 2,431 Cybertrucks Over Power Loss Risk!

November 15 News: According to media reports, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has disclosed a recall notice revealing that Tesla will recall 2,431 Cybertruck electric pickup trucks. The recall covers certain Cybertrucks produced between November 6, 2023, and July 30, 2024. Tesla stated that a fault in the drive inverter may cause it to stop generating torque. If this occurs, the driver will lose the ability to apply torque to the vehicle using the accelerator pedal, leading to a loss of power and potentially increasing the risk of a collision. There will be no prior warning of power loss, but a visual alert will immediately appear on the user interface instructing the driver to safely pull over and contact Tesla roadside assistance.

Tesla has previously addressed some Cybertruck recall issues through OTA (over-the-air) updates, such as fixing a problem where the reverse camera failed to display properly when switching to reverse gear. However, this recall involves replacing a physical component—the drive inverter—a critical part that powers the wheels. Tesla noted that there have been no reported collisions, injuries, or fatalities related to this issue.

Since its delivery began, the Cybertruck has faced numerous challenges. This latest recall of 2,431 vehicles marks the sixth recall since the electric truck was unveiled on November 22, 2019, and began deliveries on November 30 last year.

Recap of Cybertruck Recalls:

  1. First Recall (January 2024): This recall addressed issues with the font size of brake, parking brake, and ABS warning lights on the dashboard, which did not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 105 (Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems) and 135 (Light Vehicle Brake Systems). This recall involved multiple models, including the Model 3, Model Y, and the Cybertruck.

  2. Second Recall (April 2024): Tesla disclosed in an April 17 filing with the NHTSA that some 2024 Cybertruck models had an issue where the accelerator pedal cover might detach, causing the pedal to become stuck on the interior trim, thereby increasing the risk of a crash. A total of 3,878 vehicles were recalled.

  3. Third Recall (June 2024): Certain 2024 models were affected by excessive current that could cause the windshield wiper motor controller to fail. This recall affected 11,688 vehicles.

  4. Fourth Recall (June 2024): Loose decorative panels on the truck bed sides posed a hazard to trailing vehicles, increasing the risk of accidents. This recall impacted 12,150 vehicles.

  5. Fifth Recall (September 2024): In documents submitted on September 26, Tesla reported a problem with the reverse camera display. When shifting into reverse, the rearview screen could take 6–8 seconds to activate, increasing the risk of collisions. This recall affected 27,185 vehicles.

Tesla’s Cybertruck Progress and Updates:

On October 2, Tesla released its Q3 2024 production and delivery results. The company delivered approximately 463,000 vehicles globally in the third quarter, a 6.4% year-over-year increase. However, this figure fell short of the 469,800 vehicles analysts had expected. Specifically, Model 3/Y deliveries accounted for 440,000 units, while Model X/S and other vehicles made up 23,000 units.

On November 9, Tesla announced that it had cleared the Cybertruck backlog and revealed that the model ranked third in U.S. EV sales last quarter. To boost market adoption, Tesla introduced a leasing option: U.S. customers can lease the all-wheel-drive Cybertruck for three years with a $7,500 down payment and a $999 monthly fee. Alternatively, they can choose a two-year lease of the Cyberbeast version with no down payment and a monthly fee of $1,715. This flexible leasing option aims to enhance the Cybertruck's accessibility and market acceptance.
