Tesla Recalls 27,000 Cybertrucks Over Rearview Camera Software Issue

Tesla Recalls 27,000 Cybertrucks Over Rearview Camera Software Issue

Tesla recently announced a recall of 27,185 Cybertruck electric trucks, marking the fifth recall since the vehicle’s debut in late 2023. This recall addresses an issue with delayed display in the rearview camera, which impairs drivers’ ability to view rearward images promptly while reversing, heightening the risk of collisions.

According to a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affected Cybertrucks experience a software issue that may delay the rearview camera display for up to eight seconds after shifting into reverse. U.S. regulations mandate that rearview camera images appear within two seconds. Tesla reports that this display lag significantly reduces drivers’ situational awareness, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

The recall affects specific 2024 Cybertruck models manufactured between November 13, 2023, and September 14, 2024. Tesla attributes the issue to certain units’ low-voltage hardware running specific software logic, causing the camera delay. Tesla has released a free software update for owners to address this problem, with notifications scheduled to be mailed to affected owners by November 25, 2024, advising them to update the software promptly.

NHTSA disclosed that Tesla resolved the issue via an over-the-air (OTA) update on September 19, though 45 repair claims had already been filed. Previously, Cybertruck faced four recalls over various issues. The camera issue is just the latest in a series of challenges for the Cybertruck this year. In February, Tesla recalled nearly 2.2 million Cybertrucks due to small font in the anti-lock braking warning, and in April, around 4,000 units were recalled over a sticky accelerator pedal. Additional recalls in June addressed windshield wiper malfunctions and loose trim pieces.

Since Cybertruck's launch in December 2023, its futuristic stainless-steel design has attracted many consumers, yet several issues, including rust complaints, have impacted its market performance. Priced between $57,390 and $96,390, the truck’s performance has been under scrutiny.

Tesla has not yet provided detailed comments on this recall. Owners with questions can contact Tesla’s customer support at 1-877-798-3752 or visit the NHTSA website for further information. This recall has been filed under Tesla’s internal number SB-24-00-016 and is listed by NHTSA as recall number 24V-718.

The Cybertruck, Tesla’s first electric pickup, was unveiled on November 22, 2019. Tesla began deliveries in the U.S. in December 2023, offering three models: the rear-wheel-drive version at $60,990, the dual-motor at $79,990, and the “Beast” version at $99,990. The dual-motor and “Beast” are set for a 2024 release, with the rear-wheel-drive slated for 2025. On October 2, 2024, Tesla announced Q3 production and delivery figures, with approximately 463,000 global deliveries—a 6.4% year-over-year increase and the first annual growth this year, though slightly below the projected 469,800 units.

Despite ongoing quality concerns, Tesla emphasizes its commitment to enhancing safety and performance, urging all affected owners to update their software to ensure safety. As Cybertruck continues to evolve, anticipation remains high for Tesla’s potential to redefine the electric pickup market. Tesla states it will address technical issues continuously to ensure Cybertruck meets the highest safety standards.
