Camouflaged Tesla Model Y Juniper Spotted in China: Split Headlights For The First Time

On Thursday, two camouflaged Tesla Model Y vehicles were spotted in China, just two days after reports emerged that Giga Shanghai would begin production on an Model Y refresh, known as “Project Juniper.”

According to previous reports, limited trial production of the new Model Y began at the Shanghai factory on October 22. Recently, photos of the Model Y refresh taken by a bystander surfaced, showing the vehicle near the Shanghai facility, partially covered in camouflage. The release date for this new Model Y has yet to be confirmed, though, given Elon Musk’s penchant for surprise announcements, it could be revealed at any time. The Model Y refresh has already been seen on road tests, and rumors suggest a 7-seater version might be introduced, with an extended body length and enhanced practicality compared to the current model.

The camouflage on these vehicles matches that seen on Project Juniper test cars in the U.S. and Spain. However, there is a noticeable design difference compared to the cars recently spotted in Spain.

Photos shared on social media showed a Model Y refresh being towed, appearing to sport 19-inch Gemini Dark wheels.

Meanwhile, a second Model Y, also camouflaged and equipped with 20-inch Induction wheels, was spotted elsewhere in Shanghai.

In terms of exterior design, the front end of the new model has undergone significant changes, featuring a more refined silhouette and simplified detailing. It now includes split headlights, with the main lamps positioned lower. Renderings suggest it may also have a full-width LED daytime running light, a first in the Tesla lineup.

The vehicle retains a coupe-like, fastback profile along the sides, complemented by sporty black dual five-spoke wheels. Through the windows, the seats appear to resemble the sporty styling of the latest Model 3.

The rear of the vehicle has also seen notable updates, with a prominent full-width taillight that echoes the design of the headlights. Unlike typical direct-illuminating taillights, this taillight seems to use a diffused, soft glow, adding an elevated look while improving recognizability. The upper rear portion has a concave design, while the lower end features a protruding bumper and diffuser. Additionally, the vehicle’s powertrain may see upgrades, with single- and dual-motor options remaining, along with a high-performance version.

Given Tesla’s ongoing testing at Giga Shanghai, as indicated by the laptop seen in the test car, it is likely that limited production has started this week. This raises the possibility of a first-quarter 2025 release for the new Model Y in Shanghai. Should Tesla launch the updated Model Y in China during Q1, mirroring the timeline of the Model 3 refresh (also first released at Giga Shanghai), we might see a North American launch in Q2.

According to previous reports, the new Model Y will include two configurations. The refreshed 5-seater Model Y, internally codenamed “Juniper,” is expected to launch in Q1 2025, while the 7-seater version is slated for a Q4 release.

Sources close to Tesla China suggest the 7-seater Model Y is essentially a “China-exclusive” model tailored for the local market, differing from the 7-seater currently sold in the U.S. Details remain unclear, and it is unknown if the wheelbase will be extended to accommodate three rows of seats. Insiders indicate that, due to the differences between the Chinese 7-seater Model Y and the version currently available in North America, mass production and release will happen in Q4 next year.
