The latest leaked photos of the Model Y Juniper have sparked widespread discussion, while the upcoming Model 2 has also captured significant attention. Rumors about this compact car, priced just over $20,000, are growing more frequent. Let’s delve into the game-changing technologies behind it and why this car is generating so much excitement.

1. Advanced Battery Technology

First, let’s talk about the battery. The Model 2 is Tesla’s highly anticipated mass-market electric vehicle, poised to set new industry standards with its groundbreaking battery technology. It will feature CATL’s Tanning L series batteries, which will further enhance the Model 2’s performance. These batteries are designed for rapid charging, enabling the Model 2 to reach 60% charge in just 12 minutes and achieve an impressive range of up to 500 kilometers on a single charge.

As Tesla continues to push the boundaries, the company is also focused on improving battery infrastructure and efficiency. This includes a significant goal of reducing silicon carbide by 75% while maintaining performance, a breakthrough that will be integrated into the $25,000 Model 2. Additionally, recent reports indicate that Tesla’s partnership with CATL has been strengthened, aiming to develop new electrochemical structures to accelerate battery charging.

The delay in Tesla’s autonomous taxi plans suggests the company is fine-tuning these advanced features to maximize their impact. Looking ahead, Tesla remains focused on battery innovation, including the integration of LFP and M3P batteries. Initially, Tesla planned to use LFP batteries with a 53 kWh capacity in the Model 2, promising significant cost savings and enhanced safety. However, to address the limitations of LFP batteries, CATL introduced M3P batteries, which offer significant improvements in energy density, reaching 210 Wh/kg—a 15% increase over traditional LFP batteries.

These innovations demonstrate Tesla’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology, ensuring the Model 2 remains at the forefront of efficiency, performance, and affordability.

2. Software Updates

Next, let’s explore Tesla’s software updates. The new version, 2024.2.6, is designed to enhance the driving experience, and the Model 2 will benefit from this as well. Among the new features are YouTube Music and Amazon Music, allowing Model 2 owners to access over 100 million ad-free songs and podcasts directly through their in-car infotainment system, making every drive more enjoyable.

The update also introduces advanced parental controls, enabling parents to set speed limits, activate safety alerts, and enforce driving restrictions to ensure safer conditions for younger drivers. Additionally, the "Visual Speed Limit" feature uses in-car cameras to detect and display speed limit signs, improving the accuracy of and compliance with road regulations.

The new climate screen feature in update 2024.2.6 appears to be initially applied only to Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Although the Model S and Model X use a nearly identical interface, some adjustments may be necessary to accommodate their larger screens. It is currently unclear if this feature will be available for the Model 2 right away. While we haven’t seen images of the updated climate panel yet, it is expected to differ significantly from the current version. It may include options for automatic preheating and precooling to adjust the cabin temperature at specific times and days automatically. Other options might become more intuitive, such as closing passenger-side vents or holding the airflow adjustment button, though these may be limited to certain vehicles. Frequently requested features like easier access to Keep Climate, Dog Mode, and Camp Mode when the vehicle is parked are also expected.

Many customers have also requested the addition of passenger presets, allowing the vehicle to remember different passengers' settings, including climate preferences, seat positions, seat heating, and more. Elon Musk mentioned as far back as 2021 that this would be a great addition. Overall, these features not only make the Model 2 more advanced and user-friendly but also align with Tesla’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into its vehicles.

 

3. Automated In-Car Cleaning System

Tesla's groundbreaking innovation in the Model 2 combines cutting-edge technology to keep the interior impeccably clean at all times. At the heart of this system is the HVAC-integrated air circulation system, which captures and filters dust and particles, reflecting Tesla’s strong commitment to air quality.

Complementing this system is the placement of UVC lights within the cabin, which leverage their germicidal properties to effectively eliminate bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms—though specific details remain confidential. Additionally, a steam generator is employed to tackle stubborn stains, spills, and dirt, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional cleaning methods. By using steam to loosen grime, it eliminates the need for harsh chemicals. This automated cleaning system not only enhances convenience but also promotes sustainability by reducing water usage and chemical waste.

 

With these innovations, the Model 2 promises a driving experience that is not only powered by electricity but also remains impeccably clean on every journey, representing a significant leap forward in automotive hygiene. One notable improvement is the enhancement of the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) feature, which was updated through the 2023.12 software update. This update introduced AEB functionality while reversing, a feature that, although available in other vehicles, was not initially included in the release notes. We discovered its presence through a review of the owner's manual.

However, with vehicles now getting these features, Tesla decided to mention them in the release notes. According to the release notes, automatic emergency braking will now work when the vehicle is in reverse, not just when it's in motion. If the vehicle detects an obstacle in its path and a collision seems imminent, it will automatically brake. Automatic Emergency Braking is enabled by default every time you drive. This upgrade may also include Automatic Emergency Braking at speeds over 100 kilometers per hour, and in addition to its function in reverse, AEB is critical in mitigating the effects of a collision, thus reducing the likelihood of death or injury in a serious accident. It's great to see Tesla continuing to innovate in safety.

Another significant improvement is AEB's enhanced response to vertical hazards, meaning the system can now react to threats in the vehicle’s path, such as a car running a red light or suddenly cutting in. Although Tesla did not specifically mention this addition in the vehicle’s release notes, we suspect it is included, as these vehicles now seem to run on the same AI model powering FSD V12. In addition to FSD V12 and AEB improvements, Tesla has also enhanced the Forward Collision Warning (FCW) system. Now, when an FCW event occurs, the vehicle will provide not only auditory and visual alerts but also haptic feedback.

 

Tesla's commitment to improving its vehicles, with a focus on ensuring compatibility with older hardware, suggests that the Model 2 will include features that enhance the overall driving experience—from entertainment options to safety systems—setting a high standard for the new model.
