Tesla FSD Transfer Service Details: What You Need to Know

Tesla, as a pioneer in electric vehicles and autonomous driving technology, has once again surprised its consumers. Starting today, Tesla is reintroducing the free FSD (Full Self-Driving) transfer service for new Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X deliveries made between June 24 and August 31, 2024. This reintroduction fulfills a promise made by Elon Musk at the 2024 annual shareholders meeting, highlighting Tesla's commitment to its customers and confidence in its FSD technology.

Tesla first offered the FSD transfer service last year. After years of frustrated inquiries from owners, many of whom had purchased FSD more than once without seeing the promise of full self-driving realized, Musk finally agreed to allow the service. At the time, he encouraged owners to take advantage of this "one-time amnesty." Despite this, the FSD transfer service has been offered twice more since then, the most recent being earlier this year, though it was abruptly canceled just eight days after its introduction. Now, the FSD transfer service is making its fourth return, and if we are to believe Musk, it will be the last. Earlier this month, at the 2024 shareholders meeting, Elon Musk was persuaded to agree to reinstate FSD transfers for the "last quarter."

FSD Transfer Service: Seamless Integration of Smart Driving

The free FSD transfer service means that new Tesla owners can seamlessly enjoy the advanced autonomous driving experience that FSD offers. This service not only provides convenience for new owners but also reinforces Tesla's leadership in the field of autonomous driving. The benefits of the free FSD transfer service for eligible owners include:

1. Cost Savings: One of the most significant benefits of this service is cost savings. FSD capability can cost up to $15,000. By transferring the FSD from an old vehicle to a new one, owners avoid the need to repurchase the expensive software for their new vehicle.

2. Retaining Advanced Features: Owners who have invested in FSD for their current vehicle get to retain this advanced driver-assist feature on their new vehicle. This ensures they continue to benefit from the latest developments in Tesla’s autonomous driving technology.

3.Seamless Transition: The transfer service provides a seamless transition from an old vehicle to a new one. Owners can continue to enjoy the FSD capability they are accustomed to without interruption or additional cost.

Tesla FSD Transfer Applicability

The FSD Transfer Service is only applicable to orders placed between June 24, 2024, and August 31, 2024, and is available for those receiving a new Model S, Model 3, Model X, or Model Y. Foundation series Cybertrucks equipped with FSD are included, but non-Foundation Cybertrucks, which have not yet been delivered, are not eligible for this transfer offer.

Tesla FSD Transfer Incentive

Tesla has reintroduced this incentive as a strategy to encourage existing FSD owners to transfer their Full Self-Driving capability to new vehicles.

This incentive enables owners who purchased FSD—whether at the initial price of $5,000, the increased $15,000, or the current $8,000—to transfer this feature to a new Tesla. There's no need to trade in the old vehicle; you simply transfer the FSD from the existing car to the new one. The old vehicle will lose its FSD capability, but you can subscribe to or repurchase FSD for the older vehicle later if desired.

Additionally, this offer can be combined with other incentives, such as inventory price adjustments, demo model discounts, or electric vehicle rebates in North America, including the $7,500 federal rebate available on select models.

Stacked Incentives: Further Reduction in Purchase Costs

For the Model 3 Long Range AWD and Performance AWD models that qualify under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), customers can enjoy the free FSD transfer service along with a $7,500 federal tax credit. This combination of incentives significantly reduces the cost of purchasing a new Tesla, making the allure of smart driving accessible to more consumers.

This might be the last FSD transfer period, as Elon Musk is highly reluctant to continue it due to shrinking profit margins on new car sales. However, Musk did indicate that Tesla will offer additional free FSD trials in the future. The FSD transfer offer is an excellent opportunity for owners with HW3 vehicles to upgrade to HW4, as there is expected to be a divergence with Hardware 4 or Tesla's upcoming Hardware 5.0 (referred to by Tesla as AI 5).

Whether this is truly the last FSD transfer offer remains to be seen. Historically, it seems likely that it will return at some point in the future, but we can never be certain.
