Camping in a Tesla has become increasingly popular thanks to features like Camp Mode, which makes the experience comfortable and eco-friendly. Here’s how it works and some tips for making the most out of it:
How Tesla Camping Works:
Every Tesla features a camping mode. When activated, it controls the interior lighting, temperature and ventilation, and ensures continuous power to the 12V socket (cigarette lighter) and USB-C port. A huge advantage of this is that electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and even portable coffee makers can be easily charged/operated via Tesla's own on-board power supply. A particular highlight of the Tesla is the large panoramic roof. Especially at night before going to bed, you can view a star or two in the sky.
Thanks to the constant interior ventilation, fresh, clear air and, if necessary, cool/warm air constantly enters the vehicle when the camping mode is activated. Depending on the location, the temperature may drop significantly, especially at night. Ventilation ensures a proper and comfortable temperature. It also prevents condensation from forming on the Tesla side windows. The Tesla app can be used at any time to regulate the interior temperature, control the lighting and monitor the battery level.
Camp Mode: This feature allows you to maintain cabin climate control, keep the lights on, and charge your devices while parked. It’s ideal for overnight stays since the car manages its battery consumption to keep things running smoothly.
Flat Space for Sleeping: Many Tesla models, like the Model 3, Model Y, and Model X, have a spacious, flat trunk area when the seats are folded down. This creates a perfect sleeping space for camping.
Power and Charging: You can charge devices directly from the car’s USB ports, and even run small appliances using the car's internal power system, which is a great perk for those who want to bring camping gadgets.
Activating Tesla Camp Mode
Now that you know what Camp Mode can do, the question is how to turn it on. Tesla has made this very simple.
To activate Camp Mode, open the climate menu on the large screen in the Tesla Model Y or Model 3 and tap on the right side on "Camp Mode". Alternatively, you can turn on the mode via the Tesla App by swiping up in the climate menu and selecting the appropriate option.
If you get up at night and leave the vehicle, you must restart Camp Mode afterwards. It may turn off under certain circumstances.
Tips for Tesla Camping:
- Battery Management: Make sure to start camping with a sufficient battery charge, especially if you're in a remote area. Aim to park near a charging station or plan your trip so you don’t run out of charge.
- Bring Bedding: Invest in a good air mattress or sleeping pad that fits the Tesla’s trunk space. There are even Tesla-specific mattresses available.
- Ventilation and Climate Control: Take advantage of Tesla’s climate control to stay comfortable without worrying about ventilation. However, cracking a window slightly for fresh air might also improve your sleep quality.
- Privacy: Use window shades or blankets to block out light and create privacy. You can buy custom-fit sunshades or DIY with curtains for the windows.
- Storage: Make use of the frunk (front trunk) and other storage compartments for gear, so you can keep the sleeping area clutter-free.
- Entertainment: Tesla’s infotainment system lets you stream movies, music, or play games while camping, so you’ll never be bored.
- Food and Snacks: Bring a small cooler for food, as you won’t have access to refrigeration. For cooking, consider using portable cooking gear like a propane stove outside of the car.
Camping in a Tesla combines the convenience of modern technology with the freedom of nature, making it a unique and comfortable experience
