Tesla Prepares for October Robotaxi Launch | New Model Y with Red Paint Option?

A recently released drone video captured inside Tesla's Texas factory (Giga Texas) revealed a striking red Model Y. This vehicle appears to feature a yet-to-be-released deep crimson paint, distinct from the current color options Tesla offers.

On the U.S. Model Y order page, various color choices are available, including Stealth Gray, Pearl White Multi-Coat, Deep Blue Metallic, Solid Black, Quicksilver, and Ultra Red. The Ultra Red option, introduced in March 2023, is priced at $2,000 (approximately 14,202 RMB). Initially, Ultra Red was only available for the Model S and Model X, but it has since been extended to the Model 3 and Model Y.

Ultra Red replaced Tesla's previous Red Multi-Coat. While it showcases a vibrant red, it isn't as deep as Giga Berlin's Midnight Cherry Red. The Model Y spotted recently at Giga Texas features a red shade even deeper than Ultra Red.

Not long ago, a Tesla Model X test vehicle equipped with LiDAR was spotted in Northern California, drawing significant attention. Tesla has consistently stated that LiDAR isn't necessary for achieving full self-driving, yet it appears that the company is ramping up data collection in certain areas of California, including near the upcoming Robotaxi event venue.

X user and long-time Tesla tracker Green (@greentheonly) noticed on Sunday that Tesla has increased data collection near Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, where the company is expected to host the Robotaxi platform launch. Green also observed increased data collection activities in other parts of California, such as near nearby Hollywood restaurants, Supercharger construction sites, as well as in parts of San Francisco and the Bay Area.

Green shared screenshots of the Warner Bros. Studios and the expanded data collection areas as examples. He noted that the data collection began about four days ago, but little is known about the specific plans for the Robotaxi event itself.

Tesla is set to unveil its highly anticipated Robotaxi on October 10th at an event at Warner Bros. Discovery’s film studios in Burbank, located in the Los Angeles area of California. The 110-acre site with 29 sound stages has been used for filming iconic productions like “Batman” and “Friends.” In 2016, Elon Musk also showcased Tesla’s solar roof product at a Hollywood soundstage, specifically at the filming location of the popular TV show “Desperate Housewives.”

Tesla relocated its headquarters to Austin, Texas, in December 2021, but its design studio remains in Hawthorne, in the Los Angeles area of California. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has not responded to requests for comment, and a Warner Bros. spokesperson also did not immediately comment. Musk is expected to provide more details about the Robotaxi at the Los Angeles event.

The Robotaxi launch event was originally scheduled for August 8th, but in July, Tesla postponed the event, citing Musk’s request for design changes and the need for more time to create the prototype for the showcase. During a July earnings call, Musk also confirmed that the Robotaxi’s planned unveiling was delayed to October 10th.
